Upcoming projects and Commissions
Ian has a number of exciting projects taking place over the next 12 months, including:
1) The Book of Ways, where he will work on a new type of musical notation which will allow a classical ensemble to respond freely and spontaneously to what an improvising musician plays, with saxophonist Cathal Roche and the Vanbrugh Quartet;
2) A new work, Chant funèbre for Ignacio Sánchez Mejías, for Irish guitarist Redmond O'Toole. Redmond plays an 8-string 'Brahms' guitar, and this will be one of the first works specifically written for this wonderful instrument - inspired by Lorca's poem of the same name and a related Picasso painting and to be premiered next spring;
3) A song cycle based on a 3-month composer residency in the Stroke Unit of Tallaght Hospital in Dublin. Ian will interview patients, doctors, nurses and technicians from the unit and will write a 30-minute song cycle based on those recorded conversations. With soprano Deirdre Moynihan and members of the Irish Chamber Orchestra;
4) Ian is writing new works for the Béal Festival in Dublin (Ballad of Breath and Sleeping), the UK's CHROMA ensemble (Četiri kamena) and the Badke Quartet (Her charms invited), all to be premiered before the end of the year.
